Sindh bans pillion riding to ensure Muharram security

Three people can be seen on a motorcycle. — APP/File KARACHI: The Sindh government Friday announced a ban on pillion riding across the province on account of Muharram-ul-Haram — to avoid any unforeseen incident. The ban will come into place on August 5 and end on August 10, a notification from the Sindh Home Department said, with some people exempt from the ban. It will not be applicable to journalists, persons with disabilities, the elderly, women, security institutions personnel, and children, the notification read. Between August 6 and 9 some areas of Karachi could receive heavy rain. Sindh, especially Karachi, is likely to receive "above normal rain" in the coming days as a new monsoon system is likely to enter Pakistan, Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast on Thursday. According to Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz, Sindh could be affected by a monsoon system from tomorrow. Sindh, especially Karachi, may receive heavy rainfall as a result of the new system, he said. "There are chances that Karachi will see intense showers between August 6 and 9," he said. According to the forecast, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Umarkot, and Tharparkar, are also expected to receive heavy rains. Addressing a meeting at his office, Najam Ahmad Shah said that strict action would be taken against those who steal water allocated for the people of Karachi and Hyderabad.
