IHC dismisses plea on voting procedure of overseas Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday dismissed the plea against the constitutional amendment on the voting procedure for overseas Pakistanis, reported BOL News. Chief Justice Athar Minallah heard the case against the National Assembly bill revoking the Election Act. During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel argued before the court that the right of the overseas Pakistanis to vote was recognised several times but they were never granted the chance to exercise their right. “Overseas Pakistanis’ will not be given the right to vote till doomsday,” he added. The IHC Chief Justice while dismissing the plea said that he hoped that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will fulfill its responsibility. Earlier, hearing a bunch of petitions seeking voting rights for overseas Pakistanis, Justice Shujaat Ali Khan of Lahore High Court made it clear that overseas would get the right to vote at any cost. Overseas Pakistanis have a constitutional right to vote. ECP instructed concerned agencies to chalk out a plan and do needful to give voting rights to overseas Pakistanis.
