Ukrainian Tesnnis Star Lesia Tsurenko broke Wimbledon’s Strict dress code

Lesia Tsurenko was given approval to defy Wimbledon’s rigid dress code in order to support a cause that is dear to her. The Ukrainian tennis player defeated fellow countrywoman Anhelina Kalinina in the second round on Wednesday by scores of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 while sporting a blue and yellow ribbon on her blouse. She wore the ribbon again on Friday when she fell to Jule Niemeier of Germany in the third round. Tsurenko’s statement piece was a far cry from Wimbledon’s strict, all-white dress code, which in the past has required competitors to take unsuitable items of apparel off, like headgear and bras. Before the game, the 33-year-old athlete spoke with officials about wearing the ribbon, and they ultimately gave their OK. After the match, Tsurenko stated that she had worn the ribbon to draw attention to the “terrible things that are going on in Ukraine,” citing the recent missile attack on a retail centre in Kremenchuk. She added of the tragedy, which left at least 18 dead, “It’s very terrible for me to see that Russian propaganda is just stating that, for example, that retail mall in Kremenchuk was not working.” That’s false because my fitness trainer is a native of that city. He was fortunate that his mother-in-law got the day off because she works at this mall. Tsurenko claimed that she has felt helpless in the face of the fighting in her nation, but she is trying to assist as much as she can. Ten percent of the prize money won by the player in 101st place will be donated to Ukraine’s military efforts.
